Some Writing Rules for an Essay

Introduction Guidelines

The introduction should include two key elements:

• Background information necessary for the reader to understand your essay.

• A clear roadmap explaining how you will answer the question, including your main arguments and overall conclusion.

Tip: It is often easier to write the roadmap section last, once your main ideas are fully developed.

Body Paragraph Structure

A strong body paragraph typically consists of three parts:

• Topic sentence: Introduces the main idea and prepares the reader for what follows.

• Supporting sentences: Provide evidence such as examples, research findings, statistics, or quotations.

• Concluding (or transition) sentence: Summarizes the idea and links to the next point.

This structure helps maintain clarity and keeps each paragraph focused on a single idea.

The number of paragraphs will depend on the complexity of your argument and the number of ideas you need to develop.

A traditional five-paragraph essay includes an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, essays, reports, and articles can contain as many paragraphs as necessary to fully develop the central argument.
